Choose whether Google trains its AI on your content
The switch covers AI training and nothing else
Google-Extended is Google's own switch, and it answers one narrow question. May this content be used to train Google's AI models.
It is not a search crawler, it is not a ranking signal, and most site builders never show it to you at all.
You pick it during the build conversation. Choose Block and the opt-out is written into your site's robots file for you, alongside the rest of your indexing rules.
Blocking training does not hide you from Google Search
This is the part people get wrong, so here it is flat. Choosing Block does not remove your site from Google Search.
Indexing is unaffected in both directions. You are not trading visibility for privacy, and you are not buying visibility by opting in.
The AI answer engines like ChatGPT and Google's AI answers are a separate matter. Their crawlers stay welcome on your site whichever way you set this switch.
So you can make the call on its own merits, rather than on a worry about vanishing from search results.
Allow is the default, and it is still your call
The default is Allow, because being readable by AI tools is part of how people find businesses now. A page built as a clear answer unit is the kind a tool can quote.
That is a stance, not an order. Some businesses have licensing reasons to say no, some have client confidentiality, and some simply prefer it that way.
The switch sits right there in the intake — flip it and carry on. You can change it later, because it is a setting on your site rather than a one-time decision baked into the build.
The rest of your robots file is handled for you
The training choice is one line in a file the platform writes and keeps current, next to your sitemap and your indexing directives. There is no text file to hand-edit and no plugin to trust.
If you want to read what was written, the robots file sits at the usual address on your published site.
The content underneath is what carries the weight. Every page is individually built and checked against Google Search Essentials and modern web standards before it publishes.
So the switch decides who may learn from your work. The compliance gate decides whether the work is genuinely useful in the first place.
