A hero video that loads nothing until someone presses play
Paste the ordinary link
Use the plain watch or share link, the one you copy straight out of the address bar. That is one field and one save, and it is the whole setup.
Your hero switches from a photo to a video layout, with the clip as the opening line of the page.
There is no embed code, no player to set up, and no script to add anywhere on your site. You paste the same link you would send a friend, and the platform handles the rest. Both services work the same way here.
It never starts by itself
The block never autoplays, and until someone presses play the video is not loaded at all.
So a first-time visitor is not paying for a file they never asked for, and nothing from the video host runs on your page in the meantime.
Treat that as a business call rather than a technical one. A video that starts itself charges every visitor for the sake of the few who wanted it. Your page still opens with something to read while a visitor decides.
What a visitor sees before play
If you uploaded your own hero photo, that photo is the preview and the play control sits over it.
If you did not, a real thumbnail from the video shows instead. Either way a real image holds the space, so there is never a blank box or a grey rectangle where your best asset should be.
The video is for people, and the text under it is what the AI answer engines like ChatGPT and Google's AI answers read. Neither one is allowed to hide the other.
Taking it back off
Leave the link field blank and save, and the video goes away and your hero returns to its photo. Adding the link back later is the same one-field edit.
That save re-runs the compliance gate — a check that runs before anything publishes. The page is still checked against Google Search Essentials and modern web standards after the swap.
Nothing else about the page changes when the video comes off. Use a video when the clip is the genuinely useful thing you most want understood about the business. Leave it out when the page reads well without one.

Frequently asked questions
Which video services work?
YouTube and Vimeo. Paste the ordinary watch or share link, not an embed code.
Does the video slow the page down?
No. Nothing from the video loads until a visitor presses play.
What shows before someone presses play?
Your own hero photo if you uploaded one. If not, a real thumbnail taken from the video itself.
How do I remove the video?
Leave the link field blank and save. The hero goes back to your photo.
